Needing a victory to stay firmly in Major League Soccer ‘s playoff race, the reigning MLS champion prevailed in game it was expected to win by beating last-place Chivas USA , 5-0, at StubHub Center. The Galaxy’s goals came early and often despite the 92-degree temperature at game time. The Galaxy’s star forwards, Landon Donovan and Robbie Keane , each scored twice and Gyasi Zardes also scored. Also Galaxy Coach Bruce Arena suspended for game against Chivas USA Donovan tied Jeff Cunningham for the MLS all-time scoring record of 134 regular-season goals. Donovan, speaking about holding the record outright with his next goal, said “it would be nice to get it and get it out of the way so that there’s no attention on it.” He added: I would trade, maybe not all of them, but most of them for another championship ring.” When the game ended, the Galaxy was tied with the Colorado Rapids for fourth place with 48 points in the Western Conference. The two teams were only four points behind first-place Real Salt Lake , three points behind second-place Seattle and one point behind third-place Portland, which was playing Vancouver on Sunday night. The top five teams at the end of the regular season qualify for the playoffs. The Galaxy, seeking its third consecutive MLS championship, has three games left in the regular season. This was the third and final game of the regular season between the Galaxy and Chivas USA, which share StubHub Center as their home venue, in what’s known as the “SuperClasico” series. The Galaxy overwhelmed Chivas USA despite the absence of Coach Bruce Arena, who was suspended for the game for leaving the coach’s area during an argument at the previous weekend’s game against Portland. With Dave Sarachan, the team’s associate coach, at the helm, the Galaxy scored in the sixth minute when Keane, standing just inside the six-yard box, took a pass from Donovan and rolled the ball past goalkeeper Dan Kennedy. Her opponent is the very tough Justine Kish who in her first year of competing (2011) was a finalist of Master Toddy’s “Tuff Girls” series and later selected “Rookie of the Year” from the US Combat Sports Magazine. Shortly after a tough but successful year of rehab from knee reconstruction, she had a long term stay in Phuket, Thailand at the famed Sinbi Muay Thai Training Camp. After several months of rigorous training and a dozen bouts under the Sinbi banner, she was able to return to the USA as the undefeated Bangla Stadium Champion as well as the 2012 WMC 58.8kg World Champion (November, 2012). Since that time she’s been fighting wherever and whenever she can, whether it’s MMA or Muay Thai it doesn’t seem to matter. Formerly from North Carolina, as of late Kish has been training in Los Angeles for this Las Vegas skirmish. Like the men, these blood and guts gals will be fighting full rules Muay Thai which means the fans will get to see the flying elbows and knees which make the contest truly the science of eight limbs. Typical rules for amateur Muay Thai fighters are a combination of boxing with leg kicks to an opponents legs, body and head. You can also sweep or throw your opponent as long as you are using proper and legal techniques. In a full rules bout you can box, kick, knee and elbow. You can throw knees to the head by forcing your opponents head down towards the knee, and you can also throw elbows to the head or anywhere really. That’s what makes full rules Muay Thai such a risk factor.
USA BMX brings the heat, hosts Olympians in Woodward Park
Connor Fields, 21, is one of those people. A professional BMX racer with a multitude of achievements to his name, including placing seventh in BMX at the 2012 Olympic Games and multiple world championship titles, Fields is someone Adams would describe as top of their game. After winning his first heat on Saturday, Fields said his focus was on making it to the finals. Thats the biggest thing, and then in the final is when you decide what place you get for the day, Fields said. So theoretically, you could get second, thirds and fourths all day, advance to the finals, but win the final, and youd win the day. As of Sunday, Fields stood third in the AA Pro division. Fields crashed in his final and placed fourth in Saturdays race, but before the final, he said he would be stoked to take home a plate. Acknowledging that riders train for first place, Fields said there are also other reasons to race. Its my passion, Fields said. Its what Ive done since I was a little kid. Im lucky that I was good enough, Ive worked hard enough, that its turned into my job as well. Fields wasnt the only one putting his passions into action this weekend. Rick Castro, a BMX track owner and operator from Salinas, brought his son and a couple of young riders to compete and to see Fields and other pros, including 2013 BMX World Champion Sam Willoughby, ride. Coming up on 10 years with the sport, Castro said his track sees bikers from all walks, or rides, of life. A lot of riders start riding at usually about 4, but we have riders up to 60 years old that race on a weekly basis, Castro said. He said its also common to see a lot of families in the sport. A lot of dads; Im into it because my son races, Castro said.
